Growing up a military brat, Mia fell in love with soccer while her father was serving in Italy. By the age of 14, she was dominating women’s soccer in Texas and attracting attention from around the country.

After a scouting trip to watch Mia play, coach Anson Dorrance made Mia the youngest member of the national team at age 15. Following an All-American high school career, Mia decided to continue to play for Dorrance at University of North Carolina. She led the Lady Tar Heels to NCAA championships in all four years she played, while setting conference scoring records.

“I have always been uncomfortable talking about my personal accomplishments, but I must say that scoring my 100th career international goal was surprisingly emotional for me,” she said. “When I really stop and think, I have to admit that I’m a bit in awe and even thankful for the opportunity to play enough times for my country that I could score so many goals.

“For a school or team to retire your number is the ultimate compliment, and being there with Kristine [Lilly] made it even more emotional, if that’s possible. My number was retired at halftime of Duke vs. Carolina basketball game. Basketball is a huge social and sporting event in North Carolina to begin with, but when interstate rival Duke is the visiting team, the ‘Dean Dome’ takes on the raucous trappings of a championship game. To have the ceremony at halftime of the Duke game underscored how much the university cared about us and our achievements.
