7．短文英译汉

Reading is both a pastime and a means of education． Most educated men have small private libraries of their own： some have very large ones， consisting of thousands of books． Cities and towns， and even villages have public libraries．

When we have only a few minutes to spare， or when we are sitting in the train on a railway journey， we prefer to read light literature— magazines containing humorous essays and stories．

We read some books very carefully， pausing here and there to think out the meaning of a difficult sentence of paragragh． If we are studying a learned work， we make notes either in the margin of the text or on slips of paper．

Other books we read very quickly， skipping them， missing out whole pages and even chapters． Some books are very interesting ；others are uninteresting and dull． Some books are so fascinating that we read them at a sitting from cover to cover．
